Significance of NMD
5th April 1919 marks the day when SS Loyalty (ex 1890 RMS Empress of India ) belonging to Scindia Steam Navigation Ltd, promoted by Walchand Hirachand and Narottam Morarjee sailed from Bombay to UK with passengers. This venture was undertaken in face of hostile policies of the British Government which wanted to protect the business of British shipping.
Despite all odds Scindia Steam Navigation Ltd grew into a shipping company of international repute and gave the much needed impetus to Indian shipping which continued to grow for the next 70 years .
Time has come for the second revival which needs fresh investments, boost to ship building, lower logistics cost, efficient energy consumption and sustainable shipping policies including equitable sea bed / offshore exploration of resources.
