Japanese delegation visits DGS, explores collaboration opportunities in India’s maritime sector
MUMBAI : A high-level delegation from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) visited the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Mumbai, to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the maritime domain and gain an in-depth understanding of India’s maritime education and training ecosystem.
During the visit, the delegation held discussions with senior officials of the DGS to learn about India’s Examination System, Maritime Training Courses, and the Comprehensive Inspection Programme (CIP), which ensures the quality and compliance of maritime institutes across the country. The Japanese officials also examined India’s robust seafarer competency framework, recognized globally for producing highly skilled and disciplined maritime professionals.
The primary focus of the visit was to explore avenues for employing Indian seafarers in Japan’s shipping sector, reflecting Japan’s growing interest in India’s large and well-trained maritime workforce. The delegation also aimed to identify top Indian maritime training institutes for potential collaboration and knowledge exchange initiatives.
This visit underscores the deepening partnership between India and Japan in the maritime field — particularly in human resource development, safety standards, and sustainable shipping practices.
