NITI Aayog holds Consultative Meeting on Strengthening Non-Major Ports
NEW DELHI: NITI Aayog convened a consultative meeting with State Maritime Boards, port operators and key Central Ministries in News Delhi on Thursday to deliberate on the challenges and opportunities facing India’s non-major ports, as part of efforts to strengthen their role in the country’s port-led development framework.

The discussions centred on critical issues impacting non-major ports, including infrastructure development, multimodal connectivity and operational efficiency. Emphasis was placed on leveraging digitalisation to enhance port operations, improve turnaround times and ensure seamless integration with hinterland logistics networks.
Participants also deliberated on the need for regulatory, investment and governance reforms aimed at boosting the performance and global competitiveness of non-major ports. The meeting highlighted the importance of creating a supportive policy environment to attract private investment and promote sustainable growth across the sector.
The exchange of perspectives among representatives from Central Ministries, State Governments, private port operators and maritime experts generated valuable insights for shaping future policy interventions. The deliberations underscored the need for stronger Centre–State collaboration to address structural challenges and unlock the full potential of non-major ports.
The collective momentum emerging from the meeting reflects a shared commitment to building an integrated, efficient and future-ready maritime ecosystem that supports India’s long-term trade and logistics aspirations.
