Indian cargo vessel Haji Ali sinks in Oman Sea due to an explosion caused by drone or missile strike
OMAN : The Indian cargo vessel Haji Ali, reportedly linked to Salaya in Gujarat’s Devbhumi Dwarka district, sank in the Oman Sea near Limah, Oman, after a suspected explosion believed to have been caused by either a drone or missile strike. All 14 crew members onboard were rescued safely by the Oman Coast Guard.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred while the vessel was sailing from Berbera Port carrying live livestock cargo towards Sharjah. The explosion reportedly triggered a major fire onboard, forcing the crew to abandon the ship using lifeboats before the vessel eventually went down.
The rescued sailors were later shifted safely to Diba Port in Oman. Authorities confirmed that there were no fatalities, and essential crew documents were also recovered safely.
Initial reports suggest the possibility of a drone or missile attack amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding Gulf waters. Omani authorities have reportedly launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and sinking.
The incident has created concern among maritime operators and seafarers from Gujarat’s traditional shipping community, especially as tensions in Gulf shipping lanes continue to impact commercial maritime traffic. Maritime associations are reportedly urging the Indian government to ensure the safe return and protection of Indian sailors operating in the region.
