MALE: The Managing Director of State Trading Organisation (STO) Hussain Amru, stated that the amount of cargo imported to Haa Dhaalu Atoll’s Kulhudhuffushi has increased since cargo ferry services commenced between Maldives and neighbouring India.

In a tweet from his official account, Amru stated that the next ferry from India will bring 700 tonnes of cargo to Kulhudhuffushi, adding that the amount of cargo is increasing with each shipment.

Amru told local media Mihaaru that many businessmen from the northern atolls requested to bring their cargo directly from India, instead of opting for the route through capital Male.

He added that STO had assisted them in finding suppliers in India to purchase goods in bulk.

According to the MD, the amount of cargo imported to Addu Atoll and Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, in the south had also increased with the introduction of cargo ferry services.

The second cargo ferry arriving to Maldives since the commencement of the service in December, is currently on route, carrying its full capacity, Amru said.

Cargo ferry services between India to Addu and Thinadhoo are operated by Maldives State Shipping (MSS).

Cargo ferry services between Maldives and India first commenced in September. The maiden voyage was from Tuticorin to Kulhudhuffushi.
