TUTICORIN : A cape size vessel was berthed inside the port on Thursday, for the first time in history of V O Chidambaranar Port at Tuticorin . Large size bulk carriers, which can’t pass through Panama Canal and have to go around Cape of Good Hope to sail between Atlantic and Pacific oceans, are called Cape Size vessels in shipping terminology.

The cape size vessel ‘MV Cape Breeze’ with Length of 292 Metres, Breadth of 45.05 Metres and DWT of 1,80,000 Tonnes, was berthed at the Port. She was loaded with 92,300 Tonnes of Lime Stone, consigned from Port of Salalah, Oman, with arrival draft of 11.4 Metres and she was safely berthed at Berth-9, said port officials.

The entire import of Lime Stone and Gypsum are meant for Eastern Bulk Trading & Shipping Private Limited. The stevedore for the above vessel is Sea Port Logistics P Ltd. and the Steamer Agent is Seaport Shipping Pvt Ltd.

Capesize vessel MV.’LAKE D’ carrying 1,77,068 Tonnes of iron ore with a draught of 18.34m was nominated to the Port to off load 6,000 tonnes of Iron ore at Anchorage. The port using a floating crane loaded the cargo to another ship and brought it to the port then.

Port Authority Chairman T K Ramachandran lauded the achievement of VOC port. “The benefit of economies of scale by handling large vessels will hugely benefit the trade by bringing down the freight costs and making the EXIM trade competitive globally. I would like to recognize the hard work and commitment of Ship Agents, Stevedores, Harbour Mobile Crane & Conveyor Operator, Officers and Staff of Traffic & Marine Departments of the V.O. Chidambaranar Port and compliment them on the achievement of this significant milestone,” he said.

With cost effective services, excellent hinterland connectivity, state-of-the-art infrastructure, enterprising Port user community and the capacity augmentation projects being carried out by the Port, VOC Port positions itself as the most preferred Port in South India.
