SINGAPORE : India and Singapore signed four key agreements to boost collaboration in semiconductors, digital technologies, healthcare, and skill development. This move strengthens their existing partnership and positions them for growth in critical sectors.

  • The MoUs focus on areas like digital public infrastructure (DPI), cybersecurity, 5G, and emerging technologies like AI and quantum computing.
  • Collaboration on the India-Singapore semiconductor ecosystem aims to develop a talent pool and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Agreements in healthcare and education promote joint research, talent development, and upskilling in the digital domain.

Ashok Chandak, President of IESA, comments: “IESA Applauds the signing of four MoUs between India and Singapore during the meeting of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and his Singapore counterpart Mr. Lawrence Wong, aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two nations. We believe that both India and Singapore hold tremendous potential to create globally impactful products and services in the semiconductor space, Digital technology and Skilling. IESA’s recent strategic partnership and MOU with the Singapore Semiconductor Industries Association (SSIA) aligns and embeds with this vision, reinforcing our commitment to global collaboration and leveraging the semiconductor strengths of both countries towards the Global value chain. These MoUs will serve as a catalyst to expand our global footprint, fostering innovation, creating new business opportunities, and driving mutual growth.”

Key MoUs Signed Between India and Singapore

1. Digital Technologies Cooperation: The first MoU was inked between India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information. This agreement aims to enhance cooperation in digital technologies, including Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), cybersecurity, 5G, supercomputing, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence. It also sets the groundwork for collaborative efforts in upskilling and reskilling workers to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

2. Semiconductor Ecosystem Partnership: A landmark agreement on semiconductor collaboration was signed between India’s MeitY and Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry. The MoU focuses on developing a robust semiconductor ecosystem, fostering talent in semiconductor design and manufacturing, and facilitating Singapore’s investment in India. With Singapore playing a crucial role in the global semiconductor supply chain, accounting for 10% of all chips and 20% of semiconductor manufacturing equipment production, this agreement could significantly boost India’s semiconductor ambitions.

3. Health Cooperation: India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Singapore’s Ministry of Health signed an MoU on cooperation in the health and medical sectors. This agreement focuses on joint efforts in research and innovation in areas of mutual interest, such as healthcare technology, and promotes the development of human resources in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. Additionally, it aims to complement India’s efforts to position its healthcare professionals in Singapore.

4. Education and Skill Development: The fourth MoU was signed between India’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Singapore’s Ministry of Education. It emphasizes enhancing cooperation in technical and vocational education and training. This agreement will build upon existing collaborations in skill development, supporting both countries in preparing their workforce for future challenges.

Elevating Bilateral Ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

During the meeting, both Prime Ministers expressed their commitment to taking India-Singapore relations to new heights. Prime Minister Modi highlighted the synergy between the two countries, noting that Singapore serves not only as a partner nation but also as an inspiration for every developing country. “We also want to create many Singapores in India, and I am happy that we are working together in this direction,” PM Modi remarked. He emphasized that the newly formed ministerial roundtable between the two nations is a path-breaking mechanism for deepening their partnership.

The leaders also agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which encompasses cooperation in advanced manufacturing, connectivity, digitalization, healthcare, skills development, and sustainability. They reviewed various facets of the relationship, focusing on areas such as mobility, AI, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing.

Conclusion

The new MoUs and the decision to elevate bilateral ties reflect the growing strategic importance of the India-Singapore partnership. With shared goals in digitalization, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and skill development, both nations are well-positioned to harness new opportunities and drive economic growth in the coming years.
