DG Shipping signs MoU with National Union of Seafarers of India NUSI for ‘Sagar Mein Yog – Complete Wellness at Sea’ Initiative
MUMBAI : The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) and the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) have embarked on a transformative journey to prioritize the well-being of Indian seafarers through the pioneering program, ‘Sagar Mein Yog – Complete Wellness at Sea.’ This groundbreaking initiative aims to integrate yoga and holistic wellness practices into the lives of seafarers, addressing the unique challenges they face during extended voyages.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Shri Shyam Jaganathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, and Shri Milind Kandalgaonkar, General Secretary-cum-Treasurer of NUSI, marking a significant milestone in India’s maritime history. Speaking at the ceremony, Shri Shyam Jaganathan underlined the importance of this collaboration: “This partnership signifies our unwavering commitment to creating a supportive and healthier maritime environment. The well-being of our seafarers is not just a priority—it’s fundamental to the future of our maritime industry.” Echoing this sentiment, Shri Milind Kandalgaonkar highlighted the initiative’s relevance in this context: “Seafarers face unprecedented pressures during prolonged voyages. This initiative provides comprehensive support for their mental and physical well-being, addressing a critical need in the maritime sector.”
Key Features of the Initiative Standardized Wellness Programs: Implementation of yoga and wellness curricula across maritime training institutes nationwide. Psychological Support Services: Integration of mental health support systems to address stress and anxiety among seafarers. Specialized Curriculum Development: Tailored wellness programs designed specifically for maritime professionals. Support Networks: Establishment of dedicated networks for active seafarers and their families to ensure ongoing support.
The DGS will provide essential assistance, including guidance, logistical support, and collaborations with wellness experts, to facilitate the program’s rollout. The flagship program, ‘Sagar Mein Yog,’ underscores India’s commitment to setting global benchmarks in seafarer welfare, further solidifying its position as a leader in maritime workforce wellness. The program builds on NUSI’s prior initiatives, including the ‘NUSI Sahara’ mental health program launched in 2017, ensuring comprehensive support for all ranks of Indian seafarers pre-sea, post-sea, and onboard ships.
