Suez Canal Authority and Libyan delegates discuss expanded maritime cooperation
EGYPT : Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, hosted a meeting with a delegation from Emaar Libya Holding and representatives from Libyan ports, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation in maritime services and port development.
The delegation, led by Dr. Abdelhamid Mousa Awad, Chairman of Emaar Libya Holding, included key figures such as Dr. Idris Al-Habouni from the Tobruk Free Zone and executives from the ports of Benghazi and Sirte. This gathering, held at the Suez Canal Authority’s headquarters in Ismailia, delved into potential collaborations across various sectors including maritime training, marine and logistics services, and port infrastructure development.
General Rabie reiterated the Suez Canal Authority’s commitment to strengthening ties with Libya, particularly by sharing its maritime expertise and technological capabilities. He highlighted the Authority’s involvement in previous projects like the dredging of Sirte Port, emphasizing the ongoing role of the Canal Ports Company in Libyan port development.
The discussions also covered the operation of advanced fishing vessels in Libyan territorial waters, aligning with mutual interests in boosting marine resources. General Rabie introduced the delegation to the Suez Canal Authority’s latest deep-sea fishing vessel, the Rizk 1, noting that similar vessels are currently under construction in Egypt.
Dr. Awad expressed his anticipation for leveraging the Suez Canal Authority’s resources, particularly for enhancing Libya’s maritime training through programs offered at the Suez Canal Training Academy for Maritime and Simulation. He commended the Authority’s comprehensive capabilities in maritime and logistics operations, identifying these as crucial for fostering economic growth in Libya.
The meeting concluded with a tour of the Authority’s marine units and discussions on yacht manufacturing and tourism potentials at Suez Canal marinas, underscoring the broad scope of potential cooperation between Egypt and Libya in maritime and economic sectors.
