MSC reportedly acquires majority stake in Ukraine’s largest Private Port Operator TIS Group

ODESSA : In a development that could significantly reshape Ukraine’s maritime and logistics landscape, media reports indicate that MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has acquired a 51 percent controlling stake in TIS Group, the country’s largest private terminal operator. The move is being viewed by industry observers as a strong vote of confidence in Ukraine’s long-term trade and port sector recovery.

In a social post its mentioned that, ” Container giant MSC has gained control of the TIS terminal in the port of Yuzhny. One of the world’s largest container operators, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has acquired a 51% stake in the TIS container terminal in the port of Yuzhny. The Association of International Freight Forwarders of Ukraine noted that MSC’s arrival could increase competition among container terminals and stimulate the development of Ukraine’s port infrastructure. It could also bring international standards of management and service.”

According to reports, MSC has acquired the majority stake previously held by DP World, which recently exited its investment in TIS Group. Earlier this year, DP World sold its shares back to the founders of TIS, ending its involvement in the Ukrainian terminal business. Industry sources have linked the decision to DP World’s strategic realignment following agreements involving Russia’s Northern Sea Route development initiatives.

The reported entry of MSC marks what many local logistics and maritime executives describe as a landmark moment for Ukraine’s port industry. It would represent the first significant investment by a major global container shipping line in the country’s port infrastructure, bringing with it the potential for enhanced operational standards, greater international connectivity, and long-term infrastructure development.

Founded in 1994, TIS (TransInvestService) Group has grown into Ukraine’s leading private terminal operator. Prior to the outbreak of the conflict, its facilities at Pivdennyi Port, part of the Greater Odessa Port complex on the Black Sea, handled more than 30 million tonnes of cargo annually, accounting for approximately 20 percent of Ukraine’s total cargo throughput.

TIS operates a diversified port complex with specialized terminals for containers, grain, bulk commodities, and project cargo. The port is recognized for having one of the deepest container terminals in Ukraine, enabling it to accommodate larger vessels while offering seamless multimodal connectivity through direct rail and road links to inland industrial and agricultural centers.

Industry stakeholders believe MSC’s reported investment could accelerate the modernization of terminal operations, strengthen Ukraine’s integration into global shipping networks, and support the country’s future economic recovery efforts. The transaction also highlights continued international interest in strategically important logistics infrastructure despite ongoing regional challenges.

If confirmed, the acquisition would further expand MSC’s growing global terminal portfolio while reinforcing its position as one of the world’s most influential players in maritime transport and port operations. The reported acquisition remains subject to regulatory approvals, particularly given MSC’s existing presence in Ukraine through its strategic investment in HHLA (Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG), which operates a container terminal in Odesa. Industry analysts note that the transaction could create valuable operational synergies between the terminal assets while enhancing connectivity across MSC’s wider European logistics network.

Experts believe that integrating TIS Group into MSC’s global ecosystem would provide Ukrainian exporters and importers with improved access to key international trade corridors and strategically located terminals across Europe, including MSC-linked facilities in Trieste, Italy, and Tallinn, Estonia. Such connectivity could strengthen supply chain resilience and support the future growth of Ukraine’s maritime trade sector.

The proposed investment is the latest step in MSC’s broader strategy of expanding its terminal and inland logistics footprint worldwide. Over the past year, the company has steadily increased its presence in Ukraine, acquiring a 50 percent stake in an intermodal logistics operator and a 25 percent interest in a cross-border cargo terminal. These investments reflect MSC’s long-term confidence in the country’s logistics potential and its role as a key gateway between Europe and global markets.

Beyond Ukraine, MSC has continued to pursue an ambitious expansion strategy across Europe and other regions through a series of terminal acquisitions and infrastructure investments. The shipping giant is also a key participant in the high-profile bid to acquire CK Hutchison’s extensive global portfolio of port terminals, a transaction that would further strengthen MSC’s position as one of the world’s leading integrated transport and logistics groups.

Should the TIS transaction receive the necessary approvals, it would represent another significant milestone in MSC’s transformation from a container shipping carrier into a fully integrated logistics and terminal operator, while potentially accelerating the modernization and international integration of Ukraine’s port sector.
