
Capt. Somesh Batra honoured with NMIS Lifetime Achievement Award for pioneering contributions to the Shipping industry
MUMBAI : The 45th Convocation Ceremony of the Narottam Morarjee Institute of Shipping (NMIS) was held on 18th July 2025, marking another milestone in the institute’s illustrious journey in maritime education. The event was conducted under the esteemed guidance of Capt Rahul Bhargva, Chairman of the Governing Council, and Dr. Surjit Dingra, Director of NMIS.

The convocation was graced by Shri Sameer Khare, IAS (Retd.), Chairman of the National Shipping Board, as the Chief Guest, whose presence added immense value and prestige to the occasion.

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Capt Somesh Batra, honoring his decades of contribution to the Indian shipping industry.
Capt. Somesh Batra, a Master Mariner and distinguished business leader who holds multiple key leadership roles in the Shipping industry. As a former ship Captain with Shipping Corporation of India, he has commanded a wide range of vessels, including modern container vessels. Capt. Batra’s journey in the maritime industry spans decades of leadership, innovation and service, highlighted a communique.
This Lifetime Achievement Award is initiated by Narottam Morarjee Institute of Shipping (NMIS), an autonomous body and a premier maritime education institution established in 1969. NIMS is the first institute in India to offer maritime training in the commercial sector.
The award was presented to Capt. Somesh Batra by Mr Sameer Kumar Khare, IAS, Chairman of National Maritime Board, during the 45th Convocation & Prize Distribution Ceremony held at the Shipping Corporation of India, Mumbai. It was graced, among others, by Capt. Rahul Bhargava, Chairman of NMIS, and Dr Surjit Dhingra, Director of NMIS.



NMIS also conferred the Honorary Fellowship upon eminent maritime leaders for their outstanding service and leadership: Capt Anoop Kumar Sharma, Mr. Umesh Grover, Capt M.M. Saggi ( In his absence Mr. Anil Devli received his award).

In recognition of academic excellence, Adv. Manisha Tiwari, a distinguished faculty member of NMIS, received the Award for Distinguished Academic Contribution, applauding her unwavering dedication to legal education in maritime studies.
This convocation ceremony not only celebrated the academic accomplishments of our graduating students but also reaffirmed NMIS’s commitment to nurturing thought leaders and industry pioneers in shipping, logistics and maritime management.
