ClassNK issues certificates of Approval of Manufacturing Procedure and Type Approval for KOBELCO Wire Company’s Semi-Parallel Wire Cable (High-Corrosion-Resistant Type)

TOKYO: ClassNK has issued certificates of Approval of Manufacturing Procedure and Type Approval for a High-Corrosion-Resistant Type Semi-Parallel Wire Cable (SPWC) developed by KOBELCO WIRE COMPANY, LTD. This approval confirms that the product complies with the requirements specified in the ClassNK’s regulations, and represents first ClassNK approval for a high-corrosion-resistant SPWC.

The high-corrosion-resistant SPWC is a cable composed of polyethylene-coated strands made of 7 mm-diameter galvanized steel wires, and is said to have high fatigue strength and corrosion protection. It is expected to serve as a new option for mooring lines of floating offshore wind turbine structures, providing material characteristics distinct from steel chains and synthetic fiber ropes, and without limiting the mooring configuration.

Upon receiving the application from the company, ClassNK conducted examinations of the product based on its “Guidelines for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines”, confirmed compliance with the prescribed requirements, and consequently issued the certificates.

ClassNK will continue to contribute to the advancement and social implementation of new technologies for offshore wind power by conducting safety evaluations and other related activities.
