Cosco Shipping terminal in Peru to start operations this month
CHANCAY : Cosco Shipping’s new container terminal in Chancay, Peru, will launch operation in November, further enhancing trading between Asia and South America.
Invested in and built by Cosco Shipping Ports, Chancay Port Terminal is located approximately 60 km north of the Peruvian capital of Lima. As a deepwater port with a maximum depth of 17.8 meters, the Chancay Port can accommodate ultra-large container vessels. The Chancay Terminal project consists of a multi-purpose terminal, a container terminal, and related infrastructure. Its first-phase project plans to build four berths, with two multi-purpose and two container berths. The terminal is designed to handle an annual throughput of one million TEUs, 6 million tonnes of general cargo, and 160,000 vehicles, said the Belt and Road Portal website.
Peru’s President Dina Boluarte said in July the megaport being built in Chancay, a small town just north of Lima, will serve as a “nerve center” to facilitate connections between South America and Asia.
In the future capacity can be extended to handle 24,000 teu capacity vessels.
The first phase project sees the construction of four operational berths, including two container berths and two multi-purpose berths, with trial operation phase between November 2023 and May 2024.
Once the commercial operation of the port has started, it can reduce the shipping transfer time between Peru and China from 35-40 days to 23 days, with the aim to become an international transit hub port in South America.
