DG Shipping and GMU sign MoU on Institutional Development, Legal Research, and Strategic Maritime Management

MUMBAI : The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) and Gujarat Maritime University (GMU) formally entered into an Institutional Support Agreement aimed at fostering cooperation in areas of institutional development, legal research, and strategic maritime management.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony was held on Friday, June 6, 2025 at DG Shipping office in Mumbai under the visionary leadership of Shri Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, marking a pivotal step toward strengthening institutional collaboration in the maritime sector.

This partnership is designed to promote extensive knowledge exchange, capacity building, and policy-level inputs to advance maritime education, training, and regulatory frameworks. A key focus of the agreement is on enhancing collaboration in maritime legal studies, promoting joint research initiatives on contemporary maritime law issues, and offering legal consultancy and academic support to address evolving challenges in the sector.

The MoU reflects a shared commitment to support India’s maritime vision through sustained academic engagement, thought leadership, and legal excellence in maritime governance.

Dignitaries present from the Directorate General of Shipping on the occasion includes Shri Sushil Mansing Khopde, IPS, Additional Director General, Shri Ajithkumar Sukumaran, Chief Surveyor-cum-Addl. DG (Engineering), Shri Deependra Singh Bisen, Deputy Director General (MSL) and from Gujarat maritime University Prof. Dr. S. Shanthakumar, Provost, Gujarat Maritime University, Prof. Dr. Tanuja Kaushik, Dean, Academic Affairs, Dr. Mohit Gupta, Dean, Research, Dr. Abhay Singh, Director, School of Maritime Law, Policy and Administration (SMLPA). All senior officers of the Directorate General of Shipping were present during the signing of MoU.
