DG Shipping (SWFS) hosts Symposium on Seafarers’ Recruitment & Welfare today

MUMBAI: The Directorate General of Shipping (SWFS) is organizing a Symposium on Seafarers’ Recruitment & Welfare at the CIDCO Convention Centre, Vashi, bringing together eminent maritime leaders, industry experts, and policymakers to deliberate on the future of seafarer recruitment, welfare, and empowerment.

The event will be graced by Shri Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, as the Chief Guest. The Guests of Honour include Shri Sushil Mansing Khopde, IPS, Additional Director General of Shipping; Capt. S.I. Abul Kalam Azad, Nautical Advisor-cum-Additional DG; and Shri Ajithkumar Sukumaran, Chief Surveyor-cum-Additional DG.

The symposium will feature insightful addresses by leading experts from the maritime sector, including:

  • Capt. Nitin Mukesh – Deputy Nautical Advisor-cum-Senior DDG (Tech), Member Secretary SWFS
  • Capt. P.C. Meena – Nautical Surveyor-cum-DDG (Tech)
  • Shri Deependra Singh Bisen – Deputy Director General of Shipping
  • Capt. (Dr.) Daniel J. Joseph – Deputy Director General of Shipping (Tech)
  • Capt. Baljeet Singh – Surveyor, Indian Register of Shipping (IRS)
  • Shri Steve Trowsdale – Inspectorate Coordinator, International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF)
  • Shri Shiv Iyer – Managing Partner, Renata Partners
  • Capt. Gagan Dhillon – CEO, West of England P&I Club’s UAE
  • Capt. (Dr.) Bikram Singh Bhatia – World Maritime University India Alumni Association

The symposium aims to foster collaborative discussions on enhancing seafarer welfare frameworks, strengthening recruitment opportunities, and addressing emerging challenges in the maritime workforce ecosystem.

By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the Directorate General of Shipping seeks to reinforce India’s position as a global leader in seafarer recruitment and to ensure holistic well-being for those who form the backbone of international trade.
