Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships commemorates world marine aids to ‘Navigation Day 2026’ at Gandhidham

GANDHIDHAM : The Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL), Gandhidham, commemorated World Marine Aids to Navigation Day 2026 on 1 July 2026, reaffirming the indispensable role of Marine Aids to Navigation (AtoN) in ensuring safe, efficient and sustainable maritime navigation. The event highlighted India’s continued commitment to strengthening maritime safety through modern, resilient and environmentally responsible navigation systems.

Shri Satish Devdas Kamath, Principal Officer (I/c), Mercantile Marine Department (MMD), Kandla, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He was accompanied by Capt. P.C. Meena and Capt. Hemant Jarwal, Nautical Surveyors-cum-Deputy Director General (Technical), along with officers of MMD Kandla.

The programme was hosted by Shri Ajaya Kumar Debata, Deputy Director General, Vessel Traffic Services (VTS), Gandhidham, DGLL, and Shri Julius Fernandes, Director, VTS Gandhidham, DGLL. The event was also attended by Shri S.K. Ghosh, Former Deputy Director, DGLL, along with senior officials, maritime professionals and distinguished guests.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Satish Kamath underscored the enduring significance of lighthouses and other marine navigation systems in safeguarding lives at sea.

“A lighthouse is not just a tower of light—it is a promise of safety and assurance for the seafarers,” he said. He paid tribute to the unwavering dedication of lighthouse keepers, engineers, technicians, field personnel and the invaluable support extended by their families, whose collective efforts ensure uninterrupted navigation services and contribute significantly to maritime safety.

The event showcased the vital role of Marine Aids to Navigation—including lighthouses, buoys, beacons, Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) and advanced digital navigation systems—in facilitating safe navigation, promoting efficient maritime trade and protecting the marine environment. The programme also highlighted DGLL’s ongoing initiatives to modernise AtoN infrastructure through automation, remote monitoring, digital technologies and sustainable practices, in line with India’s vision of building a future-ready maritime sector.

The celebrations concluded with vibrant cultural performances by DGLL personnel, professional artists and children, reflecting the spirit of service, dedication and community that continues to strengthen India’s maritime ecosystem.

World Marine Aids to Navigation Day is observed globally to recognise the critical contribution of Marine Aids to Navigation in enhancing the safety, efficiency and sustainability of international shipping. The observance also honours the commitment of professionals working tirelessly to ensure safe passage for vessels across the world’s waterways.
