Dr. Jaishanker meets President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, Annita Demetriou

NEW DELHI : External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar day met a high-level Parliamentary Delegation from Cyprus led by Ms. Annita Demetriou, President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, during their official visit to India.

In a cordial and forward-looking meeting, both sides reviewed the long-standing friendship between India and Cyprus, reaffirming their shared values of democracy, rule of law, and multilateral cooperation. Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral engagements across political, economic, and cultural domains.

Dr. Jaishankar emphasised India’s strong stance on respect for territorial integrity, and reiterated a firm opposition to terrorism, extremism, and radicalisation in all its forms. He noted that India and Cyprus share converging strategic perspectives, particularly on global peace, stability, and adherence to international law.

The meeting also covered opportunities to boost investments, enhance shipping and maritime cooperation, expand educational exchanges, and deepen collaboration in emerging sectors such as digital governance and renewable energy.

Dr. Jaishankar expressed confidence that Cyprus’s upcoming Presidency of the European Union in 2026 will play a constructive role in further advancing India–EU relations. He highlighted the growing momentum in India–EU engagements, including ongoing trade and technology partnerships, and said Cyprus’s support could help accelerate key initiatives.

Ms. Annita Demetriou appreciated India’s role as a reliable global partner and conveyed Cyprus’s commitment to enhancing parliamentary cooperation and people-to-people ties.

The visit is expected to add fresh impetus to the India–Cyprus partnership, which marks 62 years of diplomatic relations this year.
