GRSE and HSL forge strategic alliance to accelerate indigenous shipbuilding programme
KOLKATA : In a significant boost to India’s shipbuilding self-reliance and maritime capability, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd and Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday, February 09, 2026, to form a strategic consortium for executing a large-scale, nationally significant shipbuilding programme.
The collaboration marks an important milestone in strengthening India’s indigenous defence and maritime manufacturing ecosystem. The proposed consortium will focus on the construction of advanced maritime platforms, reinforcing the country’s long-term operational readiness and technological advancement in the naval and strategic domains.
The MoU was signed by Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd.), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, and Capt Ganti Venkateswarlu, IN (Retd.), Officiating Chairman & Managing Director, HSL, in the presence of senior officials from both organisations.
The partnership seeks to harness the complementary strengths, technical expertise, and infrastructure capabilities of GRSE and HSL. By pooling resources and leveraging their extensive experience in ship design, engineering, and complex vessel construction, the two premier shipyards aim to deliver high-quality, technologically advanced maritime platforms aligned with national strategic priorities.
This strategic collaboration is expected to enhance domestic shipbuilding capacity, promote knowledge sharing, optimise project execution timelines, and contribute meaningfully to the Government of India’s vision of Aatmanirbharta in defence manufacturing.
With this MoU, GRSE and HSL reaffirm their commitment to strengthening India’s maritime infrastructure and reinforcing the nation’s position as a capable and self-reliant shipbuilding power.
