Gujarat exports over 856 metric tonnes of mangoes in 2024–25
GANDHINAGAR : Gujarat’s Kesar Mango is increasingly capturing international markets, with the state exporting over 856 metric tonnes of mangoes in the year 2024–25 alone.
Over the five-year period from 2019–20 to 2024–25, Gujarat exported more than 3,000 metric tonnes of mangoes to several global destinations, including the United States and South Africa.
State Agriculture Minister Shri Raghavji Patel highlighted the growing global appeal of Gujarat’s Kesar mango, stating, “The popularity of Gujarat’s Kesar mango continues to grow steadily. In response to the rising demand, the state government has introduced incentive-driven initiatives to expand mango cultivation across Gujarat.”
Gujarat’s mango push
Mango cultivation occupies a substantial share of Gujarat’s horticultural activity. Of the total 4.71 lakh hectares under horticulture in the state, around 1.77 lakh hectares, or 37%, are exclusively dedicated to mango farming.
The mango-growing belt in Gujarat is concentrated mainly in the districts of Valsad, Navsari, Gir Somnath, Kutch, and Surat. In 2024–25, Valsad led with 38,000 hectares under mango cultivation, followed by Navsari (34,800 hectares), Gir Somnath (18,400 hectares), Kutch (12,000 hectares), and Surat (10,200 hectares).
Among the varieties grown, the Kesar mango from Talala Gir is the most celebrated, having received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its distinctive quality and flavour.
Minister Patel noted that while Gir remains a primary region for Kesar cultivation, the Kutch region has recently emerged as a significant contributor as well.
Mango economy developed in Gujarat
To support exports, advanced processing infrastructure has also been developed. Approximately 224 metric tonnes of Kesar mangoes were irradiated and exported this year through the Gujarat Agro Radiation Processing Facility, located at Bavla near Ahmedabad. This irradiation process helps meet stringent phytosanitary requirements in key global markets.
Besides Kesar, Gujarat also cultivates other renowned mango varieties such as Alphonso, Rajapuri, Totapuri, and Sonpari, benefiting from the state’s favourable climate and diverse soil conditions.
