H.E. Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General, IMO, visits JNPA to discuss global maritime sustainability

MUMBAI : H.E. Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), visited Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA)- India’s Best Performing Port on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, as part of his India tour-focused on promoting sustainability in the global maritime sector. Shri Shyam Jagannathan, Director General of shipping, was also present during this visit.

During his visit, he engaged in discussions with Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairperson, JNPA, and CMD, VPPL, he was facilitated with a presentation highlighting JNPA’s advancements in maritime operations and sustainability initiatives. He was also apprised about the Vadhvan Port Project Ltd. – 13th Major Port of India being developed by JNPA.

The discussions centred on JNPA’s ongoing and upcoming sustainability initiatives, underscoring
the port’s commitment to green and efficient port operations. H.E. Mr Dominguez also visited key infrastructure developments, including the JNPA Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Centralised Parking Plaza (CPP), gaining insights into the port’s integrated approach to economic growth and environmental responsibility.

Sharing his experience about his visit to JNPA, H.E. Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General, IMO, said, “It’s my first visit to Jawaharlal Nehru Port, and hopefully, it won’t be the last. The hospitality has been incredible, but more importantly, I have witnessed firsthand the efficiency and quality of service this port provides—not just for India, but for thenworld. From expanding operational capacity to environmental conservation, investing in innovation and technology, and contributing to the IMO’s efforts toward decarbonizing the shipping industry, JNPA is making remarkable strides. The commitment to investing in people is equally commendable, and I look forward to seeing even more progress in the future at this
incredible port.”

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairperson, JNPA, and CMD, VPPL, stated, “JNPA is steadfast in its mission to align with global sustainability goals by implementing eco-friendly practices and enhancing operational efficiency. About JNPA:
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is one of the premier container-handling ports in India.
Since its inception on May 26, 1989, JNPA has transformed from a bulk cargo terminal into the premier
container port in the country.
Currently, JNPA operates five container terminals – NSFT, NSICT, NSIGT, BMCT and APMT. The Port
also has a Shallow Water Berth for general cargo. A Liquid Cargo Terminal present at the JNPA Port is
managed by the BPCL-IOCL consortium. Additionally, the newly constructed coastal berth links other
Indian ports and facilitates enhancing the traffic of coastal containers.

Nestled across 277 hectares of land, JNPA also operates a meticulously designed multi-product SEZ, with
state-of-the-art infrastructure, to boost export-oriented industries in India. JNPA is also developing an all-weather, deep-draft, greenfield port at Vadhvan, in Maharashtra. It is poised to be among the top 10 ports globally and will be 100% green port since its inception.
