IMO Secretary-General, Arsenio Dominguez, named Maritime Personality of the Week by Lloyd’s Maritime Institute

LONDON : Lloyd’s Maritime Institute honored to feature Mr. Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco, a distinguished figure in the maritime industry and the current Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). His term began on January 1, 2024, marking a new chapter in a career that spans almost three decades.

Mr. Dominguez holds a Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture from Veracruzana University, Mexico, and an MBA from the University of Hull, UK. His career began in 1996 as a port engineer and later as Drydock Assistant Manager at Braswell Shipyard. In 1998, he joined the Panama Maritime Authority, where he served in various roles, including Head of the Regional Technical Office for Europe and Northern Africa, and later as Panama’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to IMO.

At the IMO, Mr. Dominguez has been instrumental in advancing global maritime initiatives on safety, security, and environmental protection. From 2017, he served as Chief of Staff to the Secretary-General, later becoming Director of the Administrative Division in 2020, and Director of the Marine Environment Division in 2022. His leadership in chairing the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and contributions to international maritime law and environmental policies have been pivotal.

Mr. Dominguez’s expertise in international shipping, maritime law, diplomacy, and international negotiations has positioned him as a key player in shaping the future of the global maritime industry. His dedication to maritime safety and environmental stewardship continues to inspire and guide global maritime policies.
