JNPA maintains operational stability amid evolving global conditions; Excels in all performance parameters

MUMBAI : Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) – India’s Largest Container Port, has demonstrated remarkable operational resilience by maintaining key performance parameters despite ongoing geopolitical disruptions in the Middle East. At a time when global supply chains continue to face uncertainty, JNPA has ensured seamless port operations through proactive planning, efficient resource utilization, and close coordination with stakeholders.

Key highlights are as follows:

Import container dwell time at JNPA improved significantly, reducing from 25.17 hours in February 2026 to 22.68 hours in March
2026, reflecting enhanced cargo clearance efficiency and streamlined processes.

• Key efficiency-driven initiatives such as Direct Port Delivery (DPD) and Direct Port Entry (DPE) continue to perform strongly, with DPD at 74.57% and DPE at 45.74% during FY 2025–26, ensuring faster cargo movement and reduced congestion.
• The average turnaround time stands at 22.61 hours, highlighting JNPA’s ability to maintain optimal vessel handling performance even during challenging conditions. Despite the substantial surge in transshipment container handling, with
  volumes increasing from 5% to 16%, JNPA continued to maintain operational efficiency. JN Port is also maintaining adequate storage capacity, with only around 50% of the port container holding space currently occupied. In addition, an extra 9.2 acres within the port area has been allocated for the storage of export containers, with reefer container occupancy also at 50%. JNPA has responded proactively through the constitution of a dedicated task force, continuous coordination with terminal operators and stakeholders, and real-time operational monitoring. Targeted measures such as the ‘Back to Town’ (BTT) movement of tractor trailers, temporary transhipment of cargo, and other decongestion initiatives have ensured operational stability.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is one of the premier containerhandling ports in India. Since its inception on May 26, 1989, JNPA has been transformed from a bulk cargo terminal into the premier container port in the country.
Currently, JNPA operates five container terminals – NSFT, NSICT, NSIGT, BMCT and APMT. The Port also has a shallow water berth for general cargo operated by Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal Pvt. Ltd. (NSDT). A Liquid Cargo Terminal present at the JNPA Port is managed by the BPCL-IOCL consortium and the additional liquid cargo terminal developed by JNPA will be operated by M/s JSW

JNPT Liquid Terminal Pvt. Ltd. Additionally, the newly constructed coastal berth links other Indian ports and facilitates enhancing the traffic of coastal containers. Nestled across 277 hectares of land, JNPA also operates a meticulously designed multi-product SEZ, with state-of-the-art infrastructure, to boost export-oriented industries in India.

JNPA is also developing an all-weather, deep-draft, greenfield port at Vadhvan, the 13th Major Port of India in Maharashtra. It is poised to be among the top 10 ports globally and will be a 100% green port since its inception.
