MUMBAI : The JNPT Container Operators Association had announced a voluntary suspension of their operations beginning today on 20th August 2024. This decision came in response to the ongoing challenges faced by operators at empty container yards, which have significantly impacted their ability to function efficiently.

In light of these developments, Shri Unmesh Wagh, Chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), swiftly convened a meeting with all key stakeholders to address the concerns. During this meeting, it was unanimously decided to draft a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to streamline and regularize the operations at empty yards. The SOP aims to provide clarity and consistency in handling the issues currently affecting the yards.

A key decision from the meeting was that, effective from 1st September 2024, all payments related to empty yards will be made online, directly by the importers/exporters. Consequently, no payments will be accepted at the empty yards themselves, ensuring a more transparent and efficient payment process.

In light of these proactive measures, the Transport Association has decided to defer its planned agitation until 9th September 2024. This will allow sufficient time for the implementation of the SOP and give all parties the opportunity to assess its effectiveness.

This coordinated effort demonstrates a strong commitment from JNPT and its stakeholders to resolve the issues and improve operations at the empty container yards.
