GANDHIDHAM : The Deendayal Port Authority (Kandla) is set for a major capacity expansion with an investment of approximately ₹57,000 crore, aimed at enhancing trade operations and integrating with global supply chains, the Union government stated .

As per a reply by the Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, to a question in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing Parliament session, the expansion includes the development of a new Smart Port at Kandla. A new Smart Port utilizing around 6 km of the waterfront has been planned to cater to trade requirements, handling multipurpose and container cargo with a capacity addition of approximately 135 MMTPA at a tentative cost of ₹27,000 crore.

Additionally, in line with the Ministry’s vision, Deendayal Port, with its extensive coastline and vast land parcel, is planning to develop a Mega Shipbuilding Cluster. The project includes components such as a shipbuilding yard, marina, fishing harbor, and township at Kandla, with an estimated cost of ₹30,000 crore.

The expansion is strategically aligned with India’s participation in key global trade routes, including the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), reinforcing Kandla Port’s role in international trade.
