KNK Ship Management signs shipbuilding contract with Shoft Shipyard for Construction of Modern Ocean-Going Tugs

DAHEJ : KNK Ship Management has announced the signing of a significant shipbuilding contract with Shoft Shipyard, Dahej, for the construction of two state-of-the-art 70 Ton Bollard Pull ASD (Azimuth Stern Drive) modern ocean-going tugs, marking a major milestone in the company’s fleet expansion and modernization programme.

The newbuilding project reinforces KNK Ship Management’s strategic commitment to strengthening its operational capabilities and expanding its fleet strength from 12 vessels to 16 vessels to meet rising industry demand and evolving maritime operational requirements.

The vessels will be constructed in accordance with the ASTDS guidelines issued by the Government of India under the Make in India initiative, reflecting a strong focus on indigenous shipbuilding, advanced marine engineering, and self-reliant maritime development. Designed to deliver superior manoeuvrability, enhanced towing capabilities, operational safety, and fuel-efficient performance, the modern ASD tugs will support a wide range of operations, including ocean-going towage, coastal assistance, harbour operations, offshore support, and emergency response services.

Built with advanced technology, robust propulsion systems, and modern navigational equipment, the tugs are expected to provide high reliability, improved operational efficiency, and greater adaptability to demanding marine environments.

The agreement also includes provisions for the future construction of two additional sister vessels under a 2 + 2 arrangement, reflecting KNK Ship Management’s long-term fleet development roadmap and sustained confidence in India’s shipbuilding ecosystem.

The project is expected to generate significant value for the domestic maritime manufacturing sector while contributing to the Government of India’s AtmaNirbhar Bharat vision by promoting indigenous capability, local expertise, employment generation, and technology-driven maritime growth.
