Kuwait Ports Authority gears up for transition to smart ports

KUWAIT : Sheikh Khaled Salem Abdulaziz Al-Sabah, Director General of Kuwait Ports Authority, has reiterated the Authority’s commitment to embracing the era of smart ports, aligning with a strategic vision to foster growth in maritime transport and secure a leadership role in the global port sector.

In a discussion with the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Sheikh Khaled outlined the Authority’s comprehensive strategy for developing its workforce in various facets of port management, operations, and information technology to streamline the transition to smart port operations. This initiative is poised to connect Kuwait’s national economy more effectively to global markets.

The focus is on equipping employees through both local and international training programs and active participation in global exhibitions and conferences to enhance their decision-making capabilities and operational efficiency.

On the financial front, Sheikh Khaled detailed strategies that have helped maintain profitability, such as optimizing costs, enhancing the efficiency of vessel unloading, and expanding storage yard capacities. These measures have notably improved the reception of ships and alleviated delays related to customs inspections.

Looking forward, the Director General disclosed plans to bolster revenue through heightened operational efficiency and strategic investment projects aimed at upgrading facilities at Shuwaikh, Shuaiba, and Doha ports. These projects will include the expansion of storage capacities and modernization of infrastructures, which will attract more global and regional business engagements.

Sheikh Khaled also highlighted ongoing short-term infrastructure developments, specifically at Shuwaikh and Shuaiba ports, focusing on utilities and internal roads to support forthcoming development projects.

When asked about achieving top global rankings, Sheikh Khaled emphasized the critical role of cutting-edge technology and infrastructure enhancements in boosting operational capabilities and aligning with international standards. The future vision includes undertaking feasibility studies for new projects such as the development of marine docks and the strategic use of land for storage to enhance revenue streams.

He also lauded the private sector’s involvement in managing and optimizing port operations, stressing its pivotal role in the operational success and management of the ports. The potential privatization of certain port sectors will align with the state’s strategic vision for future port activities, indicating a robust, forward-thinking approach to port management and development in Kuwait.
