MAWANI throughput drops 10 per cent in May

RIYADH : Ports overseen by the Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) handled 647,839 TEU in May 2024, marking a decrease of 10.1 per cent compared to 720,569 TEU in the same month of 2023.

Exported containers saw a 13.61 per cent increase, reaching 255,297 TEU compared to 224,720 TEU in the same month of 2023.

Additionally, imported containers increased by 5.3 per cent, reaching 260,065 TEU compared to 246,968 TEU last year.

In terms of handled tonnage, MAWANI achieved an 8 per cent increase during May, reaching 27.6 million tonnes compared to 25.56 million tonnes in the same month of 2023.

The total volume of general cargo reached 851,501 tonnes, solid bulk cargo reached 4.7 tonnes, and liquid bulk cargo reached 15.4 tonnes.

Transshipment containers decreased by 46.8 per cent to 132,477 TEU compared to 248,881 TEU in 2023. Maritime traffic featured a 7.7 per cent decrease to 986 ships, compared to 1,068 ships in the same month of 2023.

Earlier in April this year, MAWANI announced the first container shipment via railway from Jubail Commercial Port to Riyadh Dry Port.

More recently, MAWANI and the Port of Marseille Fos signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing cooperation in several maritime-related areas.
