AHMEDABAD : The newly inaugurated cargo terminal at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport has recorded an impressive start, capturing nearly 70% of the international freight movement in its very first month of operations.

According to airport officials, the modernized terminal — equipped with advanced handling systems, temperature-controlled facilities, and expanded warehousing space — has emerged as the preferred hub for exporters and freight forwarders.

The terminal handled consignments ranging from pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, textiles, chemicals, and perishable items such as fresh produce, which form the backbone of Gujarat’s thriving export economy. Officials noted that the pharma sector, in particular, has benefitted from the new cold chain and express clearance systems.

“This milestone reflects the growing trust of exporters and airlines in Ahmedabad’s upgraded cargo infrastructure. The terminal is designed to support the state’s manufacturing and export-led growth, ensuring faster and more efficient movement of goods,” an airport spokesperson said.

Industry analysts added that the development could shift more freight traffic towards Ahmedabad from traditional hubs like Mumbai, given Gujarat’s status as a leading industrial and pharmaceutical hub. With faster turnaround times and international connectivity, the airport is expected to play a critical role in boosting India’s air cargo competitiveness.

The airport authority also confirmed plans to expand automation-driven processes, digital tracking of consignments, and dedicated support for e-commerce logistics in the coming months.

With this achievement, SVPI Airport’s cargo terminal has set a strong foundation, signaling its potential to emerge as one of western India’s leading international freight gateways.
