PM Modi to inaugurate Vizhinjam International Seaport
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Vizhinjam International Port will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Ports Minister Shri V N Vasavan confirmed that the inaugural ceremony of the port’s first phase would be a grand event, scheduled on a date convenient for the Prime Minister.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday after receiving the commissioning certificate from an Indian Institute of Technology-Madras engineer, Vasavan emphasized the government’s focus on enhancing connectivity. “We are taking proactive measures to ensure seamless rail and road access to the port,” he stated, underscoring the importance of infrastructure for the port’s efficient operation and integration into the regional logistics network.
The minister’s remarks highlight the administration’s commitment to leveraging the port’s potential as a strategic economic hub.
Land Acquisition and Connectivity Plans Underway for Vizhinjam Port’s Rail Link. Ports Minister V N Vasavan announced that land acquisition for the proposed 10.2 km rail line connecting Balaramapuram to Vizhinjam will commence soon, as environmental and social impact assessments have been completed. “The Konkan Railway Corporation has already submitted a detailed project report,” Vasavan stated.
To enhance road connectivity, the state government plans to collaborate with the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) and the Road Safety Authority for technical expertise. “A stakeholder meeting was held on Wednesday, and further discussions will finalize remaining details,” the minister added.
Addressing concerns about land acquisition, Vasavan assured that the government would ease public apprehensions through dialogue and a comprehensive social impact assessment. “Meetings with affected residents will be organized, and compensation matters will be thoroughly discussed,” he said.
Highlighting the progress at the Vizhinjam Port, Vasavan noted that the trial run was a resounding success. Berths, breakwater construction, and crane installations for Phase 1 were completed as per specifications, marking a significant milestone for the project.
The rail and road connectivity efforts aim to bolster the port’s efficiency and integration into regional and national logistics networks.
