MELBOURNE : The Port of Melbourne has announced its May trade figures, which indicate a considerable year-on-year (YoY) rise in container throughput to 281,000 TEU.

In May 2024, full container import volumes (excluding Bass Strait) climbed over the previous year, with furniture, home appliances, and paperboard all exceeding last year’s levels.

Full container export quantities (excluding the Bass Strait) were also higher than the previous year, with lumber, hay, chaff and fodder, barley, and meats all exceeding last year’s amounts.

Total empty container movements rose compared to the previous year.

This comes after the Port of Melbourne released its trade figures for March, revealing a notable YoY rise in its container throughput, amounting to 280,900 TEU.

One month later, the port revealed its April trade numbers, which show a significant YoY increase in container throughput, totalling 270,000 TEU.
