Port of New York and New Jersey surpasses 2 million TEUs in first three months
NEW YORK : The Port of New York and New Jersey handled 701,648 TEUs in March bringing the first quarter total volumes to 2,001,449 TEUs, translating to a 12% percent growth from the same period in 2023.
This increase in volume is due to manufacturing restarting overseas following the Lunar New Year holiday, according to the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.
Imports rose by 23.5% in March totaling 353,300 TEUs, while from January through March, the Port of New York and New Jersey imported 1,028,331 TEUs), a 14.5% year-on-year increase. Exports were flat in March compared to the previous year with 117,893 TEUs and fell by 1.4% to 324,253 TEUs in the first three months of 2024.
Additionally, March rail volume increased 9.3% from March 2023’s figure, totaling 54,860 containers, while rail volume from January through March 2024 was 7.9% greater than in the same period of 2023.
