Slovenia’s Koper Port poised to strengthen India-Europe Trade

NEW DELHI : Slovenia’s Koper Port is set to play a crucial role in enhancing trade connectivity between India and Europe as part of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC). Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon emphasized that the port’s inclusion in the initiative would establish a direct, efficient, and environmentally friendly trade route between India and Central and Eastern Europe.

Speaking during her visit to New Delhi for the Raisina Dialogue, Fajon highlighted that Port Koper’s strategic position offers a shorter and faster alternative through the Suez Canal, reinforcing Slovenia’s role as a key logistics hub. With access to a consumer market of over 300 million people, Koper has been developing direct shipping links with India, making it a valuable gateway for Indian goods entering Europe.

Beyond logistics, the IMEEC collaboration aligns with broader bilateral economic goals. Slovenia and India have been deepening economic ties through the SITE (Science, Innovation, Technology, and Economy) initiative, launched in 2024. This platform facilitates technology transfer and market entry support for businesses in both countries. Priority sectors for collaboration include renewable energy, semiconductors, automation, space technology, and food processing.

Fajon also reiterated Slovenia’s strong support for an EU-India Free Trade Agreement, stressing the potential for greater economic integration amid evolving global trade dynamics. While acknowledging the complexities of negotiations, she expressed optimism that recent high-level political engagements would accelerate progress toward a mutually beneficial agreement.

As India continues expanding its trade footprint in Europe, the strategic development of Koper Port under the IMEEC framework could significantly enhance economic ties, foster sustainability in supply chains, and streamline cross-border commerce. Observers note that with Slovenia’s growing involvement, India’s trade corridor to Europe is set to become more resilient and diversified in the years ahead.
