KOLKATA : Syama Prasad Mukherjee Port (SMP Kolkata) has recorded a remarkable turnaround, shifting from a net deficit of ₹70.24 crore in FY 2013-14 to a surplus of ₹501 crore in FY 2023-24, marking a significant milestone in India’s maritime growth story.

The achievement was highlighted by Hon’ble MoS for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Shantanu Thakur at the event “Unlocking India’s Future: Inclusive Port-led Industrial Growth”, organised by SMP Kolkata on Friday, August 22 as a precursor to India Maritime Week 2025.

Shri Thakur attributed the transformation to strategic investments, infrastructure upgrades, and policy reforms under flagship initiatives such as Sagarmala and Bharatmala, with over ₹5,000 crore allocated for port development. “This success reflects the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s visionary approach towards transforming India’s ports, shipping, and inland waterways sector,” he said.

As part of India’s maritime growth strategy, SMP Kolkata is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing trade competitiveness, accelerating industrial growth, and strengthening the country’s position as a global logistics hub.
