VISL begins recruiting staff, trainees for port operation

THIRUVANANTHPURAM : With the planned September/October commissioning of Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL), the authorities have begun hiring personnel and preparing qualified applicants for various positions.

While the exact number of workers needed for the port has not yet been announced, state-owned VISL and Adani Ports, a special purpose company, have begun hiring.

In the near future, the port will need experienced engineers, people with diplomas in math and science, and people qualified in marine and port operations and management.

Recruitment for fuel station operators, vessel planners, welders, marine fitters, crane operators, electrical technicians, mechanical technicians, yard planners, and tower controllers has been announced by Adani Ports. These employees are needed for jobs involving the handling of containers and ships. State-run ASAP skilling program, said an official.

The center has also promoted executive and graduate internship and training opportunities for particular positions.

“Those with technical qualifications, recent graduates, and port-related experience are eligible to apply.” Female applicants from the five adjacent wards would be given preference, according to sources.

In addition to hiring people in general, the skilling center located in Vizhinjam trains individuals to prepare them for several specialized professions at the port. Training is being provided in accordance with the port’s specifications. Twenty-five individuals are undergoing concurrent training in the handling of containers and internal vehicle operation, which is utilized to carry containers within the port.

To operate these vehicles securely within the port, certain training is required. The port is where those undergoing the training are recruited.

Those who complete training at the skilling centre are eligible for jobs in any port.

However, the training will be given to people based on the port’s requirements initially, before starting regular courses. As more ships start arriving, manpower requirements will be assessed and more people will be trained and recruited. The first mother ship unloaded around 2,000 containers. Feeder ships picked up these containers.

Meanwhile, VISL and Adani Ports have warned prospective candidates against false job offers. VISL said that it has not outsourced recruitment to any agency, and vacancies are hosted on its website.
