Vizag Port sets new record by crossing 80 MT mark in cargo handling

VISAKHAPATNAM : The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) created a new history in Cargo Handling, on March 27, four days prior to the financial year of 2023-24 by handling 80.05 Million tonnes at Visakhapatnam Port.

This is the highest-ever cargo handling by the VPA since its inception surpassing the previous highest 73.75 MT in the financial year 2022-23.

The factors that contributed to this record volume include – POL & Crude volumes up by 27 percent, iron ore by 12 percent; fertilizer volume by 6 percent; Handling more baby cape vessels up to 43 mts beam; more than 35 percent growth in several vessels handled, VPA Secretary Mr. T. Venu Gopal said in a release here.

The Visakha Container Terminal (VCT) has reported a 28 percent increase in BOX volumes to reach 6.65 Lakh TEUs.(Ten Equivalent units).

Key Performance Indicators (KPI) also showed significant improvement – 68 percent improvement in Pre-berthing detention, 10 percent improvement in TRT & OSBD, and 8 percent improvement in Idle time at berth.

VPA registered month-wise Highest Tonnage cargo handling in May, June, October 2023, and January -2024.

VPA has registered a record HIGHEST DAY CARGO VOLUME of 4,03,978 Million Tonnes in 24 hours on January 19, 2024, duly surpassing the previous highest Day handling of 4,01,875 Million Tonnes achieved on June 17, 2023.

Reflecting its forward-looking approach and commitment to global standards, the port entered 19 Memorandum of Understandings during the Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS) 2023.

These MoUs are aimed at adopting best practices in port management operations / exploring new opportunities for trade and connectivity.

VPA Chairperson Dr. M. Angamuthu appreciated the Traffic Manager and his team for the achievement and wished the VPA team to continue in the same spirit and put best efforts to scale new heights in the future also.

By focusing on sustainable development that includes the welfare of the surrounding population, the VPA is setting a precedent of responsible and inclusive growth.

VPA has stood first among all major ports in the Swachchta Pakhwada Awards 2023, which are dedicated to cleanliness and hygiene. This accolade underscores the port’s successful implementation of practices that minimize pollution and maintain cleanliness, contributing significantly to its recognition as an environmentally responsible entity, the release added.
