VISAKHAPATNAM : Raising a high note of expectancy in the New Year on its growth momentum, the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) located strategically on the East Coast of India, has achieved a major milestone by handling 60.28 million tonnes, the highest in its 91-year-old journey in playing a key role in transforming Visakhapatnam from a tiny fishermen town into a mega metropolis.

VPA as it is popularly known after its name was changed from Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT), set a remarkable benchmark by handling 60.28 MMT) of cargo during the first three quarters of 2024-25, surpassing its previous record of 59.73 MMT during 2023-24. This achievement marks a historic moment in the illustrious 91-year history of the port.

Asked to comment on the achievement, VPA Chairman Dr M.Angamuthu told on Tuesday: “It’s a significant turnaround performance for the port with improvement in key performance indicators (KPI).” He said the New Year will be challenging and they intend to bring alternate cargoes like manganese, bauxite and fertilizers.

Dr Angamuthu said with improved mechanical and engineering development, VPA will improve its efficiency. It is incorporating changes as per the recommendations of various reputed firms including Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The thrust is to ensure faster evacuation of cargoes at a competitive rate by improving techno-economic parameters as per global benchmarks.

He commended the team’s relentless efforts, stating: “This historic achievement underscores Visakhapatnam Port’s standing as a pivotal gateway for India’s trade. It reflects our unwavering dedication to modernisation and sustainability, aligning with India’s vision for port-led economic growth.”

This extraordinary feat has been accomplished through a combination of collaborative efforts, strategic planning, and the adoption of advanced logistics and operational systems. It highlights the port’s efficiency in responding to dynamic market demands while consistently delivering exceptional service quality.

Key drivers of success, VPA officials point out, include enhanced infrastructure, commissioning of a new 100 MT crane, upgraded equipment by Visakha Container Terminal Pvt. Ltd (VCTPL), a BOT operator for faster cargo handling, deployment of state-of-the-art technology for quicker turnaround times, and implementation of dashboard analytics for real-time cargo monitoring and efficient workflow management systems to streamline operations.

VPA, as part of its determination to offer multimodal logistics solutions, has become a major player in upcoming projects like the expansion of port connectivity roads to 10 lanes, construction of internal flyovers, modernisation of existing terminals. These initiatives are expected to further enhance the port’s position as a leader in maritime trade and contribute to India’s economic progress.
