Vizhinjam International Seaport achieves a landmark achievement : Handles One million TEUs in first year
THIRUVANANTHPURAM: The Vizhinjam International Seaport has scripted history by handling 1 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) within the very first year of its operations, marking a major breakthrough for India’s maritime sector.
Commercial operations at the country’s first deep-water, fully automated transshipment terminal began in December 2024. Since then, as many as 456 vessels have berthed at the port, underscoring its rapid rise as a premier maritime hub.
Blessed with natural draft depths of up to 24 metres, Vizhinjam has been successful in attracting several ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs), capable of carrying the world’s biggest cargo loads.
Port officials said the milestone is a significant step in strengthening India’s transshipment capabilities and in reducing dependence on foreign ports. They added that the performance positions Vizhinjam to evolve into a strategic trade and logistics hub for the region.
The achievement is also seen as a reflection of Kerala’s vision to place itself on the global maritime map, leveraging Vizhinjam’s location advantage and state-of-the-art infrastructure.
