VoC Port launches major concession scheme to boost regional & international connectivity with new incentives

TUTICORIN : V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port has introduced a comprehensive Concession & Incentive Scheme aimed at enhancing long-haul maritime connectivity and attracting more mainline and regional vessel calls. The new scheme is expected to significantly strengthen the port’s role as a strategic link between Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, while expanding trade opportunities for exporters and importers in southern India.

Under the initiative, vessels calling VOC Port after connecting ports beyond Singapore/Port Kelang, major West Asian transshipment hubs such as Jebel Ali and Salalah, and key African ports will be eligible for substantial financial incentives. The scheme offers Vessel Related Charges (VRC) concessions of up to 67%, depending on the service route and frequency of calls.

According to port officials, the new framework is designed to support shipping lines operating longer hauls, encourage higher voyage frequency, and improve reliability of services to emerging markets. The concessions are expected to reduce operational costs for carriers, making Tuticorin a more attractive gateway for long-distance maritime routes.

The initiative also aligns with VOC Port’s broader strategy to become a competitive transshipment and international cargo-handling hub. By incentivizing direct and extended connectivity to African, Middle Eastern, and Far East destinations, the port aims to reduce dependency on traditional transshipment hubs and offer faster turnaround options to trade stakeholders.

Industry representatives have welcomed the move, noting that improved long-haul connectivity will boost the region’s export competitiveness—especially for sectors such as textiles, food products, minerals, and engineering goods.

The port authority expects the scheme to increase mainline vessel calls, expand service options for shippers, and elevate VOC Port’s standing as a vital maritime node supporting India’s global trade ambitions
