WMU partners with IMO on introduction to Marine Biofouling E-Learning Course

SWEDEN : The International Maritime Organization (IMO) launched a new e-learning course, “Introduction to Marine Biofouling: Impacts and Management of Risks” on 1 February. The course was developed under the GEF-UNDP-IMO GloFouling Partnerships project in collaboration with the World Maritime University (WMU) and is a significant milestone in the efforts to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species through ships’ biofouling.

The intent of the course is to raise awareness and promote the implementation of the IMO biofouling guidelines across the world. The content provides a comprehensive introduction to multiple aspects related to ships’ biofouling including its role as a vector for the introduction of invasive aquatic species, economic and environmental impacts, international and national policy, and the management solutions and technologies currently available. The course is a particularly useful tool for individuals interested in the management of biofouling and invasive aquatic species. It is also suitable for students and the general public.

WMU E-Learning Solutions contributed to the course design and development to effectively engage learners in understanding the main concepts of the related topics. Participants can complete the course at their own pace, pause, save, restart, and replay it at any time. The course includes animated e-lessons and self-assessment quizzes. Upon completion of the e-lessons, learners apply their knowledge in a scenario-based exercise to recognize various stakeholder perspectives involved in biofouling management and discover the best available options for managing biosecurity threats.

Registration for the course is free of charge and available on the IMO e-learning platform. There are no prerequisites to enrol and registration is open to the public. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion. .
