ZIM names its new 15,000 TEU LNG container vessel ‘ZIM SAMMY OFER’
SEOUL : A celebratory naming ceremony was held at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in South Korea for the new 15,000 TEU LNG-powered container ship, ZIM SAMMY OFER, the first of 10 ships ordered by Seaspan Corporation as part of a long-term chartering agreement with ZIM.
Among the dignitaries attending the ceremony were Eli Glickman, ZIM president and CEO, Bing Chen, Atlas Corp, Seaspan President & CEO and Jaytee Jung, SHI president & CEO.
The vessel is named after the late shipping magnate Sammy Ofer, who passed away in 2011.
ZIM SAMMY OFER is an LNG dual-fuel vessel that aims for a 23% emission reduction.
The neo-panamax vessel is 366 metres long with a 51-metre beam. ZIM Sammy Ofer has a propulsion system, with a max service speed of 22.5 knots, a dual-fuel main engine with an output of 46,000kW @ 80 rpm, and an Energy Efficiency Design Index.
The new boxship will join ZIM Container Service Pacific (ZCP) service connecting Asia with the United States East Coast.
A welcoming ceremony is scheduled for 30 April 2023, at Haifa Bayport in Israel during its maiden voyage.
