Drewry’s World Container Index remains steady

Drewry’s composite World Container Index (WCI) remained steady at US$9,192.50 per 40ft container this week, but it is still 250% higher than a year ago, with the shipping consultants expecting rates to remain also steady in the coming week.

The average composite index of the WCI, assessed by Drewry year-to-date, is US$7,335 per 40ft container, which is US$4,714 higher than the five-year average of US$2,621 per 40ft container.

More specifically, Drewry has reported that freight rates from Rotterdam to New York gained 2% to reach US$6,255 per 40ft box, while spot rates from Los Angeles to Shanghai and from Shanghai to Los Angeles grew 1% each to US$1,303 and US$9,947 per FEU, respectively.

However, rates on Shanghai – Genoa dropped 2% to US$12,438 per 40ft container and rates on Shanghai – Rotterdam, Rotterdam – Shanghai, Shanghai – New York and New York – Rotterdam hovered around previous weeks level.
