MARSEILLE : CMA CGM is examining the possibility of launching barge and inland-waterway services in India, signalling a potential expansion of its logistics footprint beyond ocean shipping.

In a recent interaction with Business Standard, Ludovic Renou, Senior Vice-President (Commercial Agencies Network), said the plan is still at an early “consideration” stage. The company is assessing how inland waterways could be integrated into its broader multimodal logistics ecosystem, depending on infrastructure readiness and regulatory clarity.

The exploration aligns with India’s rising maritime ambitions. Earlier this year, CMA CGM placed a major order with Cochin Shipyard Limited for six dual-fuel LNG container vessels — a milestone that underscored the company’s intent to deepen its presence in the country’s shipbuilding and maritime sectors.

CMA CGM also highlighted its optimism around the upcoming Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra, calling it a potential gateway capable of elevating India into the “global maritime premier league.”

If the inland-waterway initiative is taken forward, the company could help create more efficient and sustainable cargo corridors across India’s hinterland, easing pressure on road and rail networks while improving connectivity between remote trade clusters and major ports.
