Historic milestone for Vizag Port : Fastest-ever 70 MMT cargo throughput achieved in 289 days
VISAKHAPATNAM : Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has scripted a new chapter in its 92-year history by achieving its fastest-ever handling of 70 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) of cargo in just 289 days during the financial year 2025–26. This remarkable performance, recorded on 14 January 2026, surpasses the previous best of reaching 70 MMT in 316 days during FY 2024–25.
The achievement reflects a significant acceleration in cargo evacuation, vessel turnaround, and berth productivity, underlining the port’s growing role as a key maritime gateway on India’s east coast. Consistent growth across major cargo segments such as iron ore, coal, petroleum products, containers, fertilizers, and coastal cargo contributed to this record-breaking milestone.
VPA’s performance has been driven by a series of operational and infrastructure improvements, including enhanced mechanisation of cargo handling systems, better yard and berth planning, increased use of digital port community systems, and close coordination with railways and road transport agencies for faster hinterland connectivity.
Officials highlighted that higher average berth productivity, reduced pre-berthing detention of vessels, and improved turnaround time were crucial factors behind the accelerated cargo handling. Streamlined documentation processes and round-the-clock operations across terminals also ensured smoother cargo flow.
A senior VPA official termed the milestone “a proud moment for the entire port fraternity,” noting that it demonstrates the collective effort of port employees, terminal operators, shipping lines, stevedores, logistics partners and other stakeholders. He added that the achievement reinforces VPA’s commitment to supporting India’s trade growth and strengthening the nation’s maritime infrastructure. The port has also been steadily moving towards greener and more sustainable operations through energy-efficient equipment, increased rail share in cargo evacuation, and ongoing initiatives to reduce carbon emissions.
With this early achievement of 70 MMT, Visakhapatnam Port Authority is well positioned to surpass its annual cargo handling targets for FY 2025–26 and further consolidate its position among the leading major ports of the country.
This landmark feat stands as a testament to operational excellence, teamwork, and VPA’s unwavering commitment to nation-building through efficient and reliable maritime services.
