MUMBAI : The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI) has invited bids from shipyards for the construction of 8,000 TEU LNG-fuelled container vessels, marking a significant step towards fleet modernization and the adoption of greener technologies in India’s shipping sector. The tender is accompanied by a detailed outline technical specification that sets out the design, performance, environmental and operational requirements for the proposed vessels.
According to the specifications, the vessels will have a minimum carrying capacity of 8,000 TEUs at 14 tonnes per TEU and will be designed for unrestricted ocean-going service. The ships will be capable of carrying dry cargo containers, refrigerated containers and specified IMDG dangerous cargo while meeting the latest international standards for safety, environmental protection and operational efficiency.
The proposed vessels are planned with an overall length of about 330 metres, a beam of 50 metres, a design speed of 19 knots, and a service speed of 17 knots, with an endurance of at least 20,000 nautical miles. The design emphasizes fuel efficiency, slow steaming capability and enhanced hydrodynamic performance.
A key feature of the project is the adoption of dual-fuel propulsion technology. The vessels will be equipped with LNG-fuelled, IMO NOx Tier III-compliant main engines capable of operating on LNG with MGO/VLSFO as pilot fuel, while also being compatible with B100 biofuel. The design further incorporates energy-saving devices and EEDI-compliant features to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy.
The technical specifications also call for double-hull construction, advanced ballast management systems, LNG bunkering compatibility, modern automation, cyber-secure ship systems, and compliance with the latest IMO conventions, SOLAS, MARPOL, IGF Code and Indian regulatory requirements. Extensive model testing, risk assessments, dock trials and sea trials have been prescribed to ensure optimum performance and safety before delivery.
The tender reflects SCI’s continued focus on building a modern, environmentally sustainable fleet capable of meeting the evolving demands of global container shipping while supporting India’s long-term maritime ambitions and green shipping initiatives.
