VISAKHAPATNAM : In a significant step towards strengthening India’s maritime and shipbuilding capabilities, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu held wide-ranging discussions with Rear Admiral Chandrasekharan Raghuram, VSM (Retd.), Chairman & Managing Director, Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) on a comprehensive roadmap to unlock the immense economic potential of Andhra Pradesh’s extensive coastline.
The high-level meeting focused on positioning Andhra Pradesh as a leading maritime manufacturing and shipbuilding hub while accelerating industrial growth, employment generation, and investments under the national vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the Blue Economy.
Greenfield Shipyards to Drive HSL’s Next Phase of Growth
At the heart of the discussions were the proposed Greenfield Shipyards at Machilipatnam and Dugarajapatnam, envisioned as key pillars of HSL’s long-term expansion strategy. The new facilities are expected to significantly augment India’s shipbuilding and ship repair capacity, reduce dependence on overseas yards, and strengthen the country’s maritime industrial base.
The proposed projects are also expected to support the growing requirements of the commercial shipping, offshore, and defence sectors while enhancing India’s competitiveness in the global shipbuilding market.
Massive Employment and Skill Development Opportunities
The proposed shipyard developments are projected to generate nearly 18 lakh man-days of employment, creating substantial direct and indirect job opportunities across shipbuilding, ship repair, engineering, logistics, marine services, and allied industries.
The initiative will also foster skill development and workforce training, equipping Andhra Pradesh’s youth with advanced technical expertise required for a globally competitive maritime industry.
Major Growth Catalyst for MSMEs
The expansion is expected to provide a significant boost to the State’s industrial ecosystem by generating over ₹2,000 crore worth of business opportunities for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Local industries engaged in steel fabrication, marine equipment manufacturing, precision engineering, electrical systems, outfitting, and supply chain services are expected to benefit substantially through increased participation in India’s growing shipbuilding value chain.
Strengthening the Blue Economy
The discussions also emphasized the development of an integrated maritime ecosystem encompassing shipbuilding, ports, logistics, marine engineering, coastal infrastructure, and ancillary industries. By attracting strategic investments and fostering industrial clusters, the initiative aims to transform Andhra Pradesh into one of India’s premier maritime and logistics hubs, supporting both domestic and international trade.
The proposed developments align with the Government of India’s broader objectives of expanding maritime infrastructure, enhancing coastal economic activity, promoting indigenous manufacturing, and creating sustainable economic opportunities along the coastline.
The collaboration between the Government of Andhra Pradesh and Hindustan Shipyard Limited reflects a shared commitment to accelerating maritime-led industrialization, strengthening India’s shipbuilding ecosystem, generating large-scale employment, and positioning the State as a key driver of the nation’s Blue Economy and long-term economic growth.
