An update on the flood in Western Europe and disruptions for freight transportation

Share This News Story:

Over the last few days, several parts of Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Belgium have been flooded due to heavy rainfall. Many homes and streets were affected as well as buildings in Germany collapsed. The flood has caused deaths while many people remained missing. Additionally, the high-water levels are still rising in the river Rhine.

The severe flooding is also affecting businesses which means that companies and factories are closed. Moreover, infrastructure and transportation from and to parts of Western Europe have been impacted.

How will the flood in Western Europe impact transportation and logistics?

The flood has severely disrupted many transport links, and delays are expected. Here, we are listing specific means of transport as well as some of the locations which are affected:

  • Vessels: Parts of the river Rhine are being closed for vessels (barges). Also, the rivers Neckar and Mosel have been affected and are closed for all vessels.
  • Trains: Due to severe rainfall, many tracks are closed, for example, to and from Germersheim and Woerth. Unfortunately, the situation is also affecting trains to and from Rotterdam.
  • Trucks: As many streets and bridges are shut off due to the heavy rain and water flowing, trucks cannot transport goods within many parts of Western Europe.

However, according to weather forecasts, the weather situation will likely improve from the end of this week.
