Hapag-Lloyd to boost its box capacity with 130,000 TEUs

HAMBURG : The German liner operator, Hapag-Lloyd is in ongoing discussions for the acquisition of 10 container ships with 13,000TEU capacity each, enhancing further its total container capacity.

“We can confirm that we are in ongoing negotiations about ten 13,000TEU vessels,” a Hapag-Lloyd spokesperson told.

The German carrier will add conventionally-powered scrubber-fitted boxships, ordered by Greek ship owners Capital Ship Management and Chartworld, according to Alphaliner.

The Hamburg-based line seems to be in discussions for the acquisition of three Hyundai Samho-built 13,200TEU vessels from Capital, while it will charter another three ships of the same size.

Additionally, Hapag-Lloyd is reported to have agreed with Chartworld to buy two 13,000TEU container ships and charter another two vessels, ordered from New Century Shipbuilding in China.

According to Alphaliner, the additional ten vessels with an overall capacity of 130,000TEU will increase Hapag-Lloyd’s current orderbook to 22 container ships and 414,000TEU.
