VISAKHAPATNAM : Indian Maritime University-Visakhapatnam, Dredging Corporation of India, and Sagarmala are likely to float a special purpose vehicle to install two dredger simulators at IMU campus in Visakhapatnam. These simulators would cost about Rs 20 crore. The IMU-Vizag and DCI entered into a formal memorandum of understanding with regard to training programmes and other mutual areas of interest.

Speaking to ToI, DCI MD and CEO Captain S Divakar explained how the DCI is bridging the training needs and gaps for the industry requirements and personnel. “The IMU is offering the required dredge familiarisation as well as advanced dredging courses for the trainees to meet the guidelines of the Directorate General of Shipping. We also intend to have a hydrographic survey course at IMU, which can help the DCI as well as the industry a lot,” said Divakar.

The DCI MD added that there is no specified course for cutter suction dredgers. “The IMU, DCI, and Sagarmala can have a SPV and can have these simulators to train the operators. The simulators will help fully realise the potential of inland waterways. We are discussing this with the ministry as well as the Inland Waterways Authority of India. Probably, we will be having these two simulators placed at IMU,” said Divakar.

The DCI MD said that IMU has rolled out several management programmes in the maritime sector in recent years. “We have a long association with the IMU, which is going to be a pillar for the DCI,” said Divakar.
