Indian Coast Guard ships arrive in Maldives for maritime collaboration
NEW DELHI : The Indian Coast Guard’s two patrol vessels arrived in Maldives’s capital Male on Monday as part of their ongoing deployment to the Indian Ocean Region.
The visit by Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) ICGS Vaibhav and Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ICGS Abhiraj, underscores India’s efforts to bolster maritime collaboration and enhance bilateral ties within the region, the officials noted.
During their four-day stay, the ship’s crew will engage with the Maldives’ Coast Guard (MNDF-CG) in a series of professional interactions. These interactions will focus on enhancing capabilities in Marine Pollution Response (MPR), Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR), and Maritime Law Enforcement.
The agenda also includes cross-deck training sessions, collaborative discussions, and friendly sports events, reflecting the shared commitment to maritime safety and security.
The deployment will also underscore environmental stewardship with National Cadet Corps (NCC) personnel aboard a Coast Guard ship actively participating in an environment protection awareness programme, officials sadi. Conducted in collaboration with local youth organisations, this initiative aligns with India’s ‘Puneet Sagar Abhiyan,’ a campaign dedicated to conserving marine ecosystems.
After their Maldives visit, the vessels will continue to Sri Lanka, with planned stops in Colombo and Galle for professional engagements with their Sri Lankan counterparts.
This mission aligns with India’s “SAGAR” (Security and Growth for All in the Region) framework, which prioritises maritime cooperation, regional stability, and environmental sustainability. The visit showcases India’s shipbuilding expertise while reaffirming its commitment to strengthening ties with IOR nations and ensuring the safety and sustainability of regional waters.
