Mumbai’s Indira Dock welcomes 93 Years Old Amerigo Vespucci, Italian Navy’s ‘Most Beautiful Ship’

MUMBAI : The Italian Navy’s historic 93-year-old sailing ship, Amerigo Vespucci, recently dropped anchor at Mumbai’s Indira Dock. This event is a part of the ship’s world tour, including Villaggio Italia – an exposition showcasing the best of Italy. The ship which was anchored last Thursday, will remain stationed in Mumbai until December 2.

Several prominent dignitaries from Italy arrived aboard the ship, emphasising the visit’s goal of strengthening cultural and naval ties between India and Italy. Dubbed “the most beautiful ship in the world,” the Amerigo Vespucci has been a symbol of naval heritage and tradition for over 90 years. The ship also serves as a training vessel for the Italian Navy.

On its current five-day stay, the ship has opened its decks to the public from November 29 to December 1, offering a rare opportunity to explore its timeless charm.

As part of its Mumbai stopover on an ongoing world tour, the 1930-built ship is hosting a series of engaging events. Highlights include the Villaggio Italia exposition, showcasing Italian excellence across various domains, along with a painting competition, lifestyle product exhibitions, film screenings, and a special concert by the Italian Air Force band.

Amerigo Vespucci is on an extensive world tour, making stops in several countries as part of its expedition. Mumbai marks the 28th destination on the tour and the fifth host for the Villaggio Italia exposition.

The ship’s arrival involved the presence of several distinguished Italian dignitaries, including the Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso; the Undersecretary of State for Defence, Matteo Perego di Cremnago, representing the Minister of Defence; and the Italian Ambassador to India, H.E. Antonio Bartoli, among others.
